Islanders Basketball Opens: TAMU-CC's Teams Take the American Bank Center Floor (Corpus Christi Coastal News)

College basketball season opens this week, and in Corpus Christi that means the Islanders — Texas A&M–Corpus Christi's men and women — start the long runway toward March at the American Bank Center.

The men's program has built the Southland Conference's most reliable recent résumé, winning conference tournaments and reaching the NCAA Tournament multiple times in recent seasons, including a First Four victory that counts among the biggest wins in school history. The Islanders' identity is consistent: defense-first, guard-driven, and comfortable in the close games that decide mid-major seasons.

November's nonconference schedule mixes guarantee games at power-conference arenas — the paydays that fund mid-major programs — with home dates that build the team's rhythm before Southland play begins around the new year. For a program at TAMU-CC's level, the season is really two seasons: survive November and December, peak in February.

The women's program shares the building and has built its own competitive tradition in the Southland, developing local and Texas talent in a system that prizes the same defensive pressure.

Home games double as the university's front door to the city: students bus from Ward Island, youth teams fill sections, and the bayfront arena becomes the island's living room on game nights.

March is the metric in Corpus Christi — the Islanders have taught their fans to expect tournament conversations. November is when the teaching starts, one defensive possession at a time.
